People in St. Mary’s Bay say enough is enough and staying silent on the issue of the crab license for the plant in St. Mary’s has not worked. The crab fishery is already underway and the plant still has no license.
Verna Hayward, Mayor of St. Vincent’s-St. Stephen’s-Peter’s River on the southern Avalon, told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the owner doesn’t want a dime from government, has already spent a significant amount of money on the plant, and has their own fleet and access to millions of pounds of quota.
The Minister of Fisheries has toured the plant and towns in the region fully expected to be processing fish by now.
Hayward is calling on Premier Andrew Furey to step in and “do the right thing.” They want everyone to turn out in St. Mary’s for a demonstration, and Hayward says they’re not stopping until they get what they want.
