NAPE is calling it a crisis.
Health care institutions across the province are beyond capacity with no beds available for some patients.
NAPE President Jerry Earle says acute care facilities are over capacity, by as much as 108 per cent in Central Newfoundland, in Labrador West they’re over capacity by 10 or 12 patients who should be in a hospital bed and not in an emergency department.
He says acute care facilities are designed to operate at 85 to 90 percent, so when you start hitting 105 or 108 percent the staffing is simply not sufficient.
Earle says they’re hearing from front line health care workers “every hour” about how they are unable to manage the influx of patients and backlogs in surgical procedures.
He hasn’t heard the Minister, Premier or health authorities admit that health care is in a crisis, “We do have a crisis,” says Earle.
