Ashored Innovations, the Dartmouth-based maker of fishing equipment that reduces accidental harm to marine animals such as whales, is moving forward with the testing of their new device.
It’s made up of two different products: a MOBI (Modular Ocean Based Instrument) that contains rope on the ocean floor near traps and an ATLAS (or Automated Location Tracking program).
Aaron Stephenson, CEO of Ashored Inc., was at the Marine Institute in St. John’s as they were doing some testing on this new technology.
In addition to the obvious benefits of reducing interaction with marine life, the products can prevent trap loss or damage, such as propellor cutting or storm damage.
He says by having location information, and knowing what pieces of equipment are where in the ocean, can aid in finding lost gear, which helps to remove marine debris from fishing grounds.
