The Opposition is alleging that a report regarding bullying and harassment at Elections NL is being unduly withheld from the public.
Media first began receiving information about the report last week.
Independent MHA Paul Lane says he received a call from an employee of Elections NL, wondering why there had been no mention or action on it.
Lane claims the report was submitted to the Speaker’s Office by the citizen’s representative two months ago, adding it’s on behalf of 21 employees who allege bullying, harassment and a toxic workplace, which is overseen by CEO Bruce Chaulk.
Tory Leader David Brazil tried to ask the premier about the report during Question Period Wednesday, but was ruled out of order by Speaker Derek Bennett. His office later said the question “did not fall within the administrative competence of the Executive Branch.”
Bennett would not do interviews on the matter, and does not confirm he has such a report, instead citing relevant sections of legislation in an email to reporters.
Lane, meanwhile, says the allegations are concerning, even more so given the time it’s taking to deal with it, noting that in the meantime workers keep working at Elections NL.
