The provincial government is working with Ottawa to accelerate the creation of new protected areas in Newfoundland and Labrador.
To try and protect biodiversity and support nature conservation efforts, both governments have agreed to establish Eagle River Watershed as a protected area by 2025, which will be done in consultation with Indigenous communities.
The two governments will also negotiate a memorandum of understanding by the end of 2022 to assess the feasibility of a South Coast Fjords national marine conservation area and consider a national park in the Burgeo region.
Finally, they will look to agree to advance marine conservation on the Labrador Coast in partnership with Labrador Indigenous communities.
