It’s a weekend of getting used to new laws governing all types of off-road vehicles.
While mandatory helmets are front and centre, the new laws, which came into effect Thursday, also require children to be fitted with a restraining device.
Jolene Garland, communications officer with the RCMP, says their members are equipped to enforce the new rules and will be doing so this long weekend. She notes that many detachments have off-road machines just for that purpose.
If your child is required to be in any sort of car restraint system or a booster seat, the child will also have to be in such a device on any off-road vehicle that is equipped with a seatbelt. If there are no seatbelts on an off-road vehicle, the child is still permitted to be a passenger but must use all available safety equipment, such as a helmet.
