The Seaward Enterprises Association of Newfoundland and Labrador has come out in support of the issuance of new snow crab processing licenses.
They say the Fish Processing Licensing Board is currently considering four applications, one of which is for the plant in St. Mary’s.
That application has been a controversial one, with hundreds turning out in the town at a rally in support of the plant. Conversely, SEA-NL says workers at other operations in areas such as Bonavista, St. Lawrence and Brigus have come out against the issuance of new licenses, arguing that doing so will mean less work for existing plants.
However, SEA-NL Executive Director Ryan Cleary sides with the benefits of more licenses.
He says they are the quickest way to take pressure off the inshore fleet to fish in potentially unsafe conditions, “and that’s the bottom line for SEA-NL” says Cleary.
