One of our own is being recognized for her extraordinary career with the VOCM News Network.
VOCM’s Linda Swain is one of this year’s RTDNA Lifetime Achievement Award recipients.
Swain started in radio in 1989, working with CHVO in Carbonear as part of the Wide World Network of VOCM, before moving on to CKGA in Gander, and then onto St. John’s in 1995.
Since then, Swain has become a household name for listeners, hosting various programs such as VOCM’s Nightline and currently the host of On Target every weekday at 1:00 p.m.
A staple in the newsroom, she has covered some of the most significant events and stories of our time in Newfoundland and Labrador, being part of the team that spent three days providing ’round-the-clock coverage of Snowmageddon and following the Cougar Crash every step of the way.
“In our newsroom, no one else can turn around news like Linda,” says Program Director Greg Smith. “Linda has been a mentor and motivator for all who have and continue to work with VOCM. There’s no one more worthy of this honour.”
In her acceptance speech, Swain gave a simple answer to why she is still in radio.
“I love it,” says Swain. She says she loves not knowing what’s in store from one day to the next, and the immediacy and intimacy radio provides.
