Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador believes the conversation around public transit needs to be shifted away from just the urban centres and into a more province-wide approach.
Deatra Walsh, Director of Advocacy and Communications with MNL, says in this province the issue of public transit is often thought about in the context of the bigger cities such as St. John’s and Corner Brook, but she believes the conversation needs to be bigger than that.
In terms of what it could look like, Walsh believes that municipalities need to understand what’s already there, what the gaps are, and how people are moving around.
Walsh says a little bit of leg work is required, and then they can look toward what’s next.
She does caution, however, that public transportation should not be looked at as a “money-making endeavor.” She doesn’t think that will go very far because Newfoundland and Labrador doesn’t have the critical mass needed to make money off it.
