The Supreme Court has formally approved a deal that will see St. Kevin’s Parish in the Goulds retain property and a share of its Chase The Ace money.
The arrangement means the church, the hall and cemetery will remain with the parish, in addition to some of the $5.5 million raised through the wildly popular Chase the Ace fundraiser five years ago.
In essence, St. Kevin’s Parish will continue as a private entity outside operational control of the St. John’s Archdiocese.
The exact split of the money remains confidential since, according to lawyers, revealing such values could affect efforts to market other Church assets as the selloff to settle sex abuse claims related to the former Mount Cashel Orphanage continues.
It’s estimated total claims could exceed $100 million.
All sides are now working on identifying and quantifying the total number of claimants and the exact value of all claims in the case.
And while there’s no specific cutoff date yet to make a claim, that time is coming.
Supreme Court Justice Garrett Handrigan, who’s overseeing the insolvency process, has said he will make himself available on short notice to deal with any significant developments in the matter.
