The Port of Argentia has signed an agreement with Pattern Energy to advance the development of a renewable energy project in the region.
The option to lease agreement is for a potential wind energy to hydrogen project.
Through the agreement, the company will determine the commercial feasibility of wind energy and green hydrogen production at the port. As well, the agreement will see the construction of wind turbines, a hydrogen electrolysis plant and storage facility, and other needed infrastructure.
In the end, the project’s aim is to export green fuels, such as carbon-free green ammonia, to global markets.
Port CEO Scott Penney says the port stands on the “cutting edge” of the renewable energy transition and the project will “lay the foundation” for future development of Argentia as a green port.
The Town of Placentia is applauding the lease agreement between the Port of Argentia and Pattern Energy Group LP.
Mayor Keith Pearson says the potential for a wind energy project and green gas export opportunity is big news for Placentia and the entire province.
He calls the news significant and more reason for the province to put more money into improving roads and services in the Placentia area.
