Over half of the Ukrainians who arrived on May 9 who are able to work have gotten full-time employment. That’s according to Immigration Minister Gerry Byrne.
Byrne says employers have had success in providing full-time jobs to Ukrainian newcomers in Deer Lake, Stephenville, Mount Pearl, Bonavista, and St. John’s.
He says the most important aspect for employers is to be able to inform the newcomers where they are going to live, as many have no clue about the communities they may be going to. He cites the success of Sunset Kitchens in Bonavista as proof.
He says when they came to St. John’s they had a pitch that included employment, housing, childcare, and school options ready for refugees. Sunrise was able to attract three people to come to the community.
Province Seeking Affordable Housing Options for Refugees
Meanwhile, the provincial government is asking for affordable housing options to be brought forward for Ukrainian refugees.
They are looking for rooms, apartments, and rental units as long-term accommodations to help retain newcomers. They say offers in the Metro region are in high demand.
Anyone willing to offer accommadations is asked to contact the Association of New Canadians by email at Ukraine@ancnl.ca or phone at 325-0881.
