The government has confirmed it’s received a report into allegations of bullying, harassment and nepotism against Elections NL CEO Bruce Chaulk.
But questions remain about the length of time it took the Speaker of the House to reveal or act on it.
Premier Andrew Furey says the first time he saw the report was Monday.
The package included several letters from Speaker Derek Bennett, one of which takes issue with how the public got wind of it all.
It was Independent MHA Paul Lane who first asked about it in the House last month, saying he was hearing from people upset by inaction, with work continuing amid claims of a toxic office.
The Premier says Speaker Bennett had the report for numerous months, yet only informed government this week.
Why he had it, why he didn’t do anything with it, you’ll have to ask him. I have had no conversations with the Speaker about that. All I can say is as soon as we got the report, we took immediate action.
VOCM News has tried to ask Bennett about the delay but the Speaker is not speaking, refusing all requests for an interview.
Meanwhile, Furey says the report will be released to the public once it’s vetted for privacy.
He says it will then be forwarded to the all-party House Management Commission, quote, where it belongs.
As for Bennett, Furey says, “I would hope that if the Speaker read something that was of grave concern to the health and safety and workplace, that he would’ve taken immediate action.”
