There’s a growing demand for help with the skyrocketing population of homeless cats.
Heavenly Creatures recently posted a message on Facebook that caught our attention and that of many animal lovers. The leadline was “we are doing our best.”
It painted a clear picture of the desperate need for support for homeless animals and the angst of not always being able to provide that help and shelter.
Jessica Rendell, the founder of the rescue organization, says the cat population has gotten worse over the years—not better. The dog population is under control says Rendell, but she described the cat population as heartbreaking.
Heavenly Creatures, the SPCA and the City of St. John’s each has support programs to help people with vet bills but she says government help is needed.
The cost to have her friend’s border collie neutered is going to be $800 and she can afford it. So doing a medium to large female dog would be over $1000 and to have a cat spayed is $600. She says some people can’t afford that nowadays with the cost of food, gas, and heat rising all the time. “When people are struggling, animals are struggling.”
