The PC Opposition is joining the chorus of calls for a full explanation regarding the RCMP’s actions in a west coast home last week.
Officers entered the Mount Moriah house in the middle of the night, apparently looking for a missing 17-year-old girl.
But they ended up in the wrong home, waking and questioning an 11-year-girl in her darkened bedroom.
The Mounties say they have the authority to go in without a warrant in certain circumstances.
But there have been contradictions in the police story since the incident occurred.
PC justice critic Helen Conway-Ottenheimer says an apology and full explanation should be the first step.
She’s also concerned about the adversarial response from the RCMP.
She says she hopes the defensiveness and us-versus-them mentality in “protecting themselves” is not indicative of a larger culture within the police force.
Conway-Ottenheimer is calling on the provincial justice minister to encourage the RCMP to “do the right thing,” by apologizing and fully explaining their actions in the case.
The RCMP have called a media availability for 3:30 p.m. to address the incident.
