Stephen Hopkins has been found guilty in connection with the sexual assault of a teenager in a Cowan Heights neighbourhood of St. John’s in 2020.
Hopkins was found guilty of forcing his way into the girl’s home and attempting to rape her in what the Crown called a “crime of opportunity”.
Hopkins has also been convicted of break and enter, forcible confinement, assault and damage to property.
Hopkins, who represented himself during the trial, wanted to appear by video conference for today’s verdict, but Justice Donald Burrage denied that request.
The matter returns to court next Friday to hear a Crown application that could lead to Hopkins being declared a dangerous offender.
Such a designation comes with an indefinite term in prison.
