The Crown is seeking to have Stephen Hopkins declared a dangerous offender.
The 30-year-old St. John’s man was found guilty of sexual assault Friday in Supreme Court.
But it’s not his first sex offence, and the Crown is clearly concerned that it won’t be his last.
Hopkins was put on the sex offender registry for attacking female joggers in 2019.
He was arrested for not reporting in, but released pending a court date.
Four days later, he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl after breaking into her Cowan Heights home.
Friday, the girl’s mother broke down as Justice Donald Burrage uttered the words, guilty as charged.
She declined to comment “out of respect for the bravery of my daughter.”
The victim was not in the courtroom.
Hopkins, his face obscured by his hair, hung his head while wringing his hands.
A dangerous offender designation comes with an indefinite prison term, which can be reviewed but could also last a lifetime.
The court will hear the Crown’s application on June 24.
