The weather co-operated to make the annual Ride for Dad a huge success on Saturday.
The event, which aims to raise awareness and funds in the battle against prostate cancer, started on schedule with about a hundred motorcycles leaving Newfoundland Power on Kenmount Road for the ride through the town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.
This year’s ride honoured many dads, but in particular Charlie Hefford, long involved with the original Avalon Ride for Dad, and who passed away earlier this year after his own 16-year battle with prostate cancer.
Hefford’s daughter, Charlette, raised almost $6,000 alone in memory of her father, whose wish to be honoured by the riders was granted on Saturday.
She says she’s still in shock that the moment happened and that it will stay with her forever, adding her father would be so proud of the special distinction in his honour.
The motorcycle parade campaign was created in 2007 and happens across the country.
The Avalon leg has raised over $1.8-million for cancer research in this province, although this year’s tally is not in yet.
