A ceremony was held at Gros Morne National Parks Discovery Centre in honor of an indigenous exhibit.
The exhibit is titled “Miawpukek: The Middle River” and explores the stories and traditions of the Mi’kmaq community on the south coast of Newfoundland.
The ceremony was in honor of the redesign and moving of the exhibit to the Conne River reserve. Led by Chief Misel Joe of the Miawpukek First Nations, the ceremony held an authentic smudging, singing of an honour song, and an indigenous prayer
Colleen Kennedy is the executive director of the Gros Morne Cooperating Association. Kennedy was very happy with the turnout, as well as seeing the younger generation get involved.
Kennedy says that the Chief asked how much indigenous history was learned in school, which was very little for her. She goes on to say that it was powerful to have the youth taking a part in the ceremony.
