The provincial government has established an Acute Response Team to address homelessness and transient homelessness in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
In January, a woman was found dead outside the Labrador Inn which serves as an emergency shelter. Just a few weeks earlier, a man passed away after being found unresponsive in the snow near the Housing Hub.
Those were among the more recent incidents involving tragedies related to homelessness and the capacity of emergency shelters in central Labrador.
The Acute Response Team is made up of Indigenous leaders, and elected provincial government officials. Its goal is to focus attention on vulnerable populations, and address housing, health and other supportive services for those who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.
