First Voice has named Inuk photographer and filmmaker Jennie Williams as the recipient of it’s 2022 Indigenous Advocate Award.
Williams was selected for the hour for her “outstanding artwork” documenting and sharing the cultural traditions of Inuit communities in Labrador.
Born in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Jennie Williams moved to St. John’s at the age of 21, and six years later moved to Nain.
It was in Nain where she spent 12 years researching and documenting some of the unique cultural traditions associated with Nalujuk Night, marked on January 6th.

Honorable mentions went to Bethany Jacobs a St. John’s-based activist and Mi’kmaw Language Facilitator Dean Simon.
