Oceana Canada is applauding the federal government’s decision to ban six new categories of single-use plastics by December of this year.
The ban includes plastic utensils, straws (with some exceptions) some takeout containers, plastic rings for packages of canned drinks, and retail grocery bags.
Oceana, which has long advocated for the reduction of single use plastics, is calling the decision a significant milestone to end Canada’s contribution to the global plastic pollution crisis.
Oceana Canada’s latest market research shows that 90 percent of those asked support a ban on single-use plastics and two-thirds want to see the ban expanded to include more harmful plastic products.
