A hydrogen and ammonia-generating facility proposed for the Port au Port Peninsula has been registered with the provincial government’s environmental assessment process.
World Enegy GH2 Inc. is proposing to develop a wind farm that would include 164 turbines to power the 0.5-gigawatt facility at the port of Stephenville.
The company says the majority of the world’s hydrogen production is produced from natural gas or coal, which is responsible for 2 per cent of global carbon emissions.
They say so-called green hydrogen is developed using renewable electricity and water, adding it can be used to de-carbonize sectors that are difficult or expensive to electrify.
World Energy says ammonia, considered the most economical way of transporting green hydrogen over large distances, can be used for fertilizer, energy storage, and transport fuel.
The company is working with the Qalipu and Miapukek on the project. The deadline for public comment is July 27.
