The Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner for Legislative Standards, Bruce Chaulk has been suspended from his position.
The provincial government today accepted the recommendation of the House of Assembly Management Commission to suspend Chaulk over allegations raised at Elections NL.
The suspension, with pay, is in effect until an independent review of the findings of the Citizens’ representative is completed. Assistant Chief Electoral Officer, Travis Wooley, will serve as acting Chief Electoral Officer. Ann Chafe, who recently retired from her role as commissioner of the Public Service Commission will serve as Acting Commissioner for Legislative Standards.
Minister of Justice and Attorney General, John Hogan, says the House Management Commission made the recommendation to suspend Chaulk following their meeting earlier today.
Hogan would not provide specifics as to what’s in the report, or when it will be released publicly.
As for how the review will be carried out, Hogan says that’s up to the Management Commission.
How the report is reviewed will be up to them. He says there are many roads they could take with that process, including a full review or a legal review of the conclusions in it.
