Today marks the return to full Canada Day celebrations in the province following years of COVID restrictions.
Municipalities across the province have a variety of activities planned including family events, music, cake, food and tournaments—not to mention the iconic Canada Day fireworks displays.
Residents are asked to check their local town Facebook pages for events specific to their areas.

A large crowd gathered on Signal Hill this morning to be the first in the country to celebrate Canada Day while attending Parks Canada’s 6 a.m. sunrise ceremony.
Liberal MP Joanne Thompson was in attendance for the event. In a speech, Thompson acknowledged the importance of Canada Day, but also recognized Indigenous peoples and Canada’s efforts towards reconciliation.
Thompson says Canada Day is a day to reflect on the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. She encourages people to learn about Indigenous culture and listen to the stories of those impacted by residential schools.
In St. John’s, Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary says they’re very excited to be returning to in-person activities and celebrations.
A family fun day is happening at King George V Park from 12 to 4 p.m. including food and fun events for all ages.
Meanwhile, the downtown Pedestrian Mall is also open for the season.
Garbage collection normally scheduled for Friday in the City of St. John’s has been pushed to Saturday because of the Memorial Day/Canada Day holiday.
Robin Hood Bay is closed to both residential and commercial users. Outdoor swimming pools and splash pads will open to the public tomorrow, while all city parking by-laws will remain in effect.
The City of Mount Pearl is holding special events for Memorial and Canada Day today.
The day kicks off at 11 a.m., with the City’s Memorial Day Service at the war memorial in St. David’s Park. Wreaths will be laid in honour of the day. The service will be live-streamed on the city’s Facebook page.
Later in the day, the Canada Day Celebrations Concert will take place, also at the park, and will feature The Navigators and The Fables. Multicultural food, bouncy castles and sweets will be available. The concert goes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Finally, the city advises that the use of fireworks on Canada Day is only permitted between dusk and 11 p.m.
