Former Premier Clyde Wells is renewing the call for joint federal-provincial management of the province’s fisheries.
Wells raised the issue during an interview with VOCM News in advance of Saturday’s 30th anniversary of the shutdown of the northern cod fishery.
The province’s fifth premier says predecessor Brian Peckford’s plan for total control was not practical. But Wells says a structure similar to the C-NLOPB would be. He says something akin to the offshore petroleum board would foster trust and eliminate clashes with other jurisdictions.
The Wells government promoted joint fisheries management in a policy paper called Changing Tides one year after the moratorium was announced.
Ten years later, former Premier Roger Grimes renewed the call by releasing a white paper on the topic.
