Just weeks after the passing of Christopher Pratt, Newfoundland – and the country – has lost another prominent artist.
David Blackwood of Wesleyville passed away on the weekend at the age of 80.
While his haunting prints depicted the history, life, and culture of Bonavista North, Blackwood, who came from a long line of Master Mariners, lived most of his life in Port Hope, Ontario.
Blackwood maintained a studio in his beloved Wesleyville and has received a number of prestigious honours for his work, including the Order of Canada in 1993 and the Order of Ontario in 2002.
A National Film Board documentary about the artist was nominated for an Academy Award in 1976.
