Nearly 25 years after it first began, paving on the Trans-Labrador Highway is finally complete.
The more than 1,100 kilometres of paved highway runs from the Labrador Straits to Labrador West.
Upgrading of the original highway began in 1997, with the Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Labrador West section being completed first. The original highway was announced in 1973.
In 2020, a contract was awarded to JCL Investments Ltd. to complete the paving of the highway with the final section, Cartwright Junction to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, wrapping up Tuesday.
Over $1 billion has been spent on building and paving the highway since 1997, with more than $230 million going to the project since 2016.
A formal celebration is planned for later in the summer.
Building a road across the expanse of #Labrador represents an incredible effort. I’m proud to be part of a Gov who remained firm in our resolve to get it done. Tomorrow M Loveless & I will witness the completion border to border. @TI_GovNL @OLA_GovNL pic.twitter.com/d7c31QKtLI
