The fish is long gone, but a whopper of a cod fish caught by Hilda Whelan near Green’s Harbour, Trinity Bay a few years ago is grabbing a lot of attention online.
The Mayor of Whitbourne says she was out participating in the food fishery with her brother and brother-in-law when her line caught up solid.
When she started to pull on the line, her brother assumed that she had snagged the bottom, but she said whatever it was it was moving and she was afraid it was going to pull her overboard.
What they ended up pulling into the boat was a good 50 to 70 pounds by her estimation.
They had no weigh scales to weigh it, so her brother held it as best he could and got on a bathroom scale. The weight came in about 45 pounds, but with most of the fish spilling out over on either side her brother believes it was 70 to 75 pounds.
For a lark, Whelan shared the picture taken a few summers ago to Facebook last night and it’s already on the way to becoming viral.
