The town of Botwood unveils its 15th mural Saturday afternoon.
“Kraken World” is the latest work adorning the garage doors of the Exploits Valley Port Corporation Building.
The painting, by Craig Goudie, features “creatures from the deep” including the famous Kraken, or giant squid. A massive 55-foot giant squid was caught in neighbouring Glover’s Harbour back in 1878, a creature that made it into the Guinness Book of World Records and which has yet to be rivaled in size.
Botwood recently unveiled a mural to the War Brides of the area, young women from Scotland and England who married Newfoundlanders during World Wars I and II and followed their spouses across the ocean.
The President of the Botwood Mural Arts Society, Trudy Stuckless, says this latest project kind of fell in their laps.
Back in December they received a call from the World Oceans Day NL committee interested in a mural. She says they have two other murals planned for the summer, but this one was an unexpected surprise.
Saturday’s unveiling will take place at 3:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the Botwood Heritage Centre and a live performance by Ian Foster and Nancy Hynes at 8:00 p.m. at the Trinity United Church in Botwood.
