Heritage Newfoundland and Labrador is helping people get to the root of the history of root cellars.
The organization recently released A History of Root Cellars in Newfoundland and Labrador, an online exhibition that goes into detail about the structures.
Terra Barrett, intangible cultural heritage researcher with Heritage NL, explains that the cellars are insulated structures that can either be above or below ground. They’re used to help preserve and protect vegetables from frost and rot.
Barrett says while they can be found all over the province, there are areas where they were more concentrated.
She says of them are still intact and in use.
According to Barrett, more and more people are starting to use the cellars again, and then there are others that, while they aren’t in use, have been refurbished. She says Elliston and Twillingate are great examples of that.
