A child is none-the-worse after a worrisome situation that unfolded at Northern Bay Sands on the weekend.
The Coast Guard’s Conception Bay inshore rescue boat crew was called to the popular beach after a child on a floatie started to drift away from shore.
The child was safely rescued and brought to a waiting ambulance as a precaution.
The incident follows a tragedy that unfolded on the waters of Sunshine Rotary Camp earlier this month after a young woman on a floating device ran into serious trouble after drifting out into deep water.
Vice President of Training Programs at the Lifesaving Society, Christopher Mercer, says floaties are great pool toys but are not safe on open bodies of water.
He says because you are essentially on the surface of the water, the floatie can act as a sail and it doesn’t take much time for the wind and current to carry you out onto water where your skills and experience may not be able to direct you safely back to shore.
He recommends if you’re heading to the beach to leave the floaties at home.
