The Canadian Coast Guard Ship John Cabot was formally dedicated in a ceremony held on the south side of St. John’s Harbour.
Regional Director, Science with DFO, Atef Mansour says the vessel, which was delivered in the fall of 2020, will be used for multi-species surveys.
The trawler will be used not only to monitor stocks of various species each spring and fall, but will also conduct oceanographic research by collecting biological and chemical data to assess environmental conditions.
The dedication was a long time coming. Stock assessments on a number of species were interrupted or suspended over the last year due to a combination of mechanical issues and weather conditions. Mansour says stock assessments are ongoing and the vessel is heading to the Scotian Shelf over the summer to assist with stock assessments there before coming back to Newfoundland this fall.
