The Opposition critic for women and gender equality is “disheartened” with revelations that the committee struck to address pay equity had not met in three years.
The information came out of a recent ATTIPP request by CBC.
Helen Conway-Ottenheimer raised the matter of pay equity legislation in the House of Assembly numerous times, but has yet to get any solid commitments from the minister responsible, Pam Parsons.
Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the few jurisdictions in the country with no pay equity legislation.
She says the latest revelation proves that government is not taking the issue seriously.
Labour activist Alyse Stewart says it appears as though pay equity isn’t even on the backburner.
“It’s not even on the stove” Stewart quips “when it should be front-and-centre.
Deputy Premier Siobhan Coady says pay equity is a complex issue, and the provincial government has implemented a job evaluation system, removing gender bias from the value of the labour that is produced.
She says a lot of work continues to happen within the department of Women and Gender Equality, and the issue remains a priority.
