The Chief of the RNC says all of the recommendations in a recent workplace review are achievable. However, he acknowledges some will take longer than others to implement and see results.
Chief Patrick Roche was doing media interviews yesterday specifically on the report, which was ordered by the province and carried out by Ontario lawyer Harriet Lewis.
Among other things, she found issues with morale, communication, resentment, suspicions of favouritism, and fears of discipline and retribution for complaining.
Nonetheless, Roche doesn’t see the report in a bad light.
He says he doesn’t view it as a negative, but rather a way forward in the right direction to make the necessary changes and improvements. And he says criticism is sometimes necessary to identify and make those improvements.
Meanwhile, Roche says it’s also sometimes necessary to remind the public of the difficult job that the police perform every day.
He notes the work is not pleasant, and if officers show up at your door it’s rarely with good news, adding interactions with the public are usually confrontational.
