Heritage NL and the Pilley’s Island Come Home Year committee is marking the official recognition of some local heritage structures in the historic community this weekend.
A plaque-unveiling ceremony is set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m., to recognize the historic, aesthetic, cultural, and spiritual value of the Pilley’s Island Methodist Church complex.
The church, churchyard, and school were designated as registered heritage structures in 2018.
The church, built in 1896 in the Gothic Revival style, replaced the previous church which had burned down. The decorative and structural metalwork was sourced from nearby copper and pyrite mines.
The adjacent school was built in 1942 to replace an earlier building and was expanded in 1950. It was later used by the local Orangeman’s Society as a meeting space until 1991.
Sunday’s plaque unveiling will be accompanied by an Ecumenical church service in a tent set up outside the Pilley’s Island Municipal Complex.
