A number of recent swimming-related tragedies have gripped the province, and are prompting those involved in water safety to offer some advice on ways to stay safe while enjoying swimming activity in the great outdoors.
Vice President of Training Programs with the Lifesaving Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, Chris Mercer says the first thing to remember when venturing out to your favourite swimming hole is never to go alone.
Have someone with you, who either knows the area or knows how to get help to the scene if something should go wrong.
Secondly, Mercer says it’s important to wear a PFD, or life jacket.
A PFD is anything that will float you, while a lifejacket is specifically designed to turn you onto your back and keep your face, mouth and nose out of the water, even if you are unconscious. Another important reminder is that alcohol and water never mix says, Mercer.
