The Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador does not believe enough supports are in place for adults with autism.
The response comes after a 22-year-old man was charged with sexual assault following an incident in Bowring Park on Monday afternoon.
Reports indicate the autistic man allegedly assaulted a woman while she was sunbathing.
Autism society CEO Paul Walsh says there’s no question there are gaps in the system, suggesting the focus to date has been on youth and those under the age of 21.
Walsh says there is a specific need for more qualified respite workers, who can fill those gaps so that caregivers can get a break or appropriate assistance.
He says the quality and availability of such services are very important.
Then there’s the issue of what Walsh calls “residential options.”
Walsh says there are such options available, with some better and more age-appropriate than others.
He noted in some cases young adults with autism have been known to live in a seniors complex, adding better solutions must be sought and implemented.
