Newfoundland and Labrador is marking its first-ever Emancipation Day.

The day celebrates the strength and perseverance of black communities in Canada, and provides an opportunity to pause and reflect on Canada’s history of anti-black racism.

The first-ever formal celebration goes ahead this afternoon at The Rooms from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m,
