The provincial government has announced that occupational health and safety charges have been laid against a company and a supervisor in relation to a fatal workplace accident in September 2020.
Triple J Aggregates Limited of Conception Bay South is facing 11 charges and the supervisor is facing one charge in relation to the incident, which happened at a quarry near St. John’s.
Most of the charges against the company are related to the use of equipment. It’s alleged that they failed to ensure that equipment in the workplace was capable of performing its functions, that proper safeguards were in place, and that machinery was being used as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
As well, they’re charged with failing to maintain the health, safety, and welfare of workers, failing to provide proper training and supervision, failing to ensure work procedures promote the safe interaction of workers, and failing to ensure that all places of employment and equipment are capable of withstanding the stress likely to be imposed on them.
The supervisor is facing one charge for their alleged failure to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of workers under their supervision.
First court appearances are scheduled for August 19 at provincial court in St. John’s.
