The towns of L’Anse Amour and Forteau Labrador have marked a significant historic event.
On August 8th, 1922 the Royal Navy Cruiser HMS Raleigh ran aground at Point Amour, claiming the lives of a dozen members of the crew. The ship was one of five Hawkins-class heavy cruisers built for the Royal Navy during WWI.
She was assigned to the North Atlantic and Caribbean and had paid visits as a flagship to numerous ports in Mexico, the US and Canada before running aground.
A ceremony was held at the Point Amour Lighthouse Historical Site yesterday to mark the loss of HMS Raleigh. Presentations on the shipwreck, which is still a popular diving site, were made, and the efforts of local residents to care for the surviving crew members were commended. Local residents also displayed artifacts salvaged from the vessel.
