The VOCM Cares Foundation is doing its part to help with the ongoing fire response efforts in central Newfoundland with a major donation to two local service organizations.
The NL Search and Rescue Association and the Lions Max Simms Memorial Camp Foundation will each receive $5,000 dollars to help with their ongoing efforts in the area.
Both organizations have been involved in supporting firefighters and emergency personnel monitoring and managing the fires in the region.
Lions District Governor Shane Budgell says Lions Max Simms Camp has been hosting weary firefighters involved in the efforts by providing them with a place to lay their heads and a hearty meal at the end of the day.
Firefighters are punching 12-hour shifts on the ground and look forward to having a place to wind down and get some much-needed rest, says Budgell.
Executive Director of the NL Search and Rescue Association and a member of the Exploits Ground Search and Rescue Team, Roger Goobie says they have been primarily involved in traffic control in fire-affected areas. He says the money will go a long way.
He says they’re already looking at purchasing a provincial emergency response trailer that they can “grab and go” if and when needed.
Both organizations say they are surprised and grateful for the financial assistance provided by VOCM Cares.
