While the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society has suspended its Puffin Patrol Program it is still reporting some great successes in rescuing the stranded birds.
CPAWS announced the suspension of the program about a month ago due to concerns around the avian flu.
The Puffin and Petrel Patrol says even though the program is suspended they still have scientists working out in the community under permits and the direction of appropriate authorities.
To date, they say 53 pufflings have been rescued.
While that number may seem low when compared to previous years they say good weather and the phases of the moon have been a big help.
At this time members of the public are asked not to handle any puffins, and to instead report any sighting to a special hotline that the organization has set up. (709-327-5365.)
