The Rooms marked Ukrainian Independence Day today with a special sunflower-making event.
Ukrainian Independence day, which marks the country’s Independence from the Soviet Union, holds a different level of significance today.
It has been six months since Russia’s invasion of the country, causing thousands to flee their homes.
According to the provincial government, since the invasion began over 600 Ukrainians have arrived in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Several of those people were at today’s event at The Rooms, making solidarity sunflowers to both celebrate Ukrainian Independence and show support for the war-torn nation.
Michael Ostababenko, a boy who came here from Ukraine several months ago, says it was important to come out to the event because there were a lot of other Ukrainians there and it’s a place where they can be united, share stories, and discuss what is happening in the country.
Today is Ukrainian Independence Day – a day which holds a different level of significance today as it also marks 6 months since the Russian invasion began.
