There has been much discussion about hydrogen of late, but what exactly is it, how is it produced and how is it used?
Premier Andrew Furey says Newfoundland and Labrador is perfectly suited for the production of hydrogen, a fuel derived from water which requires a great deal of electricity to produce.
That’s where the wind farms come in. The proposed wind farms will generate the power needed to produce hydrogen.
“You take water, which we have an abundance of,” says Furey, “put it through an electrolyser and you make hydrogen.” Instead of producing Co2 which is helping to accelerate climate change, hydrogen which can be used to fuel cars, trucks and ships essentially emits water.
Furey says Newfoundland and Labrador’s location on the northeast coast of North America is also beneficial to hydrogen production and distribution.
The premier says the province is rich with wind, water, deepwater ports and an adaptable workforce.
