Some 13,000 additional mammography images taken in the province in recent years will need to be re-read after it was determined that the images were not read to technical standards.
Central Health last week revealed that some 3,000 images would need to be re-read after determining that the images were read at viewing stations using 3 megapixels instead of the standard 5 megapixels which provide greater detail.
That prompted the other health authorities to conduct reviews of their viewing stations to determine whether any images might need to be re-read.
Eastern, Western and Labrador-Grenfell Health provided an update on their preliminary reviews and have determined that some 13,000 images will need to be re-read.
Eastern Health and Labrador-Grenfell Health—the mammography images of which are read by Eastern Health—have identified approximately 3,000 images each dating back three years. Western Health has identified over 7,500 images dating back to 2013 that require further review.
There is no immediate word on whether any changes have been detected. To date, discrepancies have been identified in four images in the Central Health region.
