The Newfoundland Pony Society is offering a few suggestions to those who want to visit some of the province’s heritage animals this long holiday weekend.
The Society has issued a list of sites where the public can get access to Newfoundland ponies, but they’re offering a stern reminder—don’t feed them.
Well-meaning visitors may have contributed to the death of a pony this summer by offering the animal too many apples, despite the fact that signs were clearly posted asking people not to feed the ponies.
Ponies and horses can develop colic—which can be deadly—from overeating or eating the wrong things.
Areas, where people can view the animals that helped to build the province, include the Heritage Pasture in Hopeall, the Doctor’s House in Green’s Harbour, NL Pony Pals in South River, Cappahayden on the Southern Shore, Hobbs Farm in Bunyan’s Cove, the Change Islands Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary, Terra Nova Cottages, Devoe Ranch in Doyles and Government House in St. John’s.
It’s #labourday2022 and the heritage pasture at Hopeall will be open from 10-4 today thru Sunday! Drop by and meet the two beautiful Newfoundland Ponies on pasture. @DildoBrewingCo @downhomelife @manltweets @DoctorsHouseNL #tourismNL #comehome2022 pic.twitter.com/7WQOKYWAxf
