Newfoundland and Labrador’s sugar tax is now in full force, but a longtime critic of the plan says many retailers still are not ready.
Tony Wakeham has been calling for government to put a stop to its plans for the tax ever since it was first announced.
The tax is now in place but Wakeham says he’s still fielding calls from business owners unsure of the specifics around how the tax is supposed to work.
He says there’s a lot of confusion around who does what, with very little communication from government.
In a statement, the Department of Finance says they have been working closely with all wholesalers and retailers since the beginning.
They say their webpage is being updated continually with information around what drinks are included and contact information for those with questions.
The department says they are “actively responding to inquiries” and will continue to do so. Anyone looking for more information can call 709-729-6297, or toll-free at 1-877-729-6376, or email taxadmin@gov.nl.ca.
