“It happened again”
The devastating incident at Come By Chance on Friday has many harkening back to a similar tragic event 24 years ago and determined to ensure that workers are kept safe.
Two workers were killed and another was injured as the result of a fire/explosion at the refinery in March of 1998. Charges were laid under the Public Safety and Occupational Health and Safety acts at that time.
The details of what happened on Friday at Come By Chance are now the subject of a police and separate internal investigation according to Steelworkers Union rep Glenn Nolan.
He indicates there is a process that needs to be followed and it will take time to learn exactly what happened.
Eight people were physically injured—six of whom are still in hospital—in an explosion or flash fire at the facility late Friday afternoon.
Nolan says the incident has had a devastating impact on the workers, their families, co-workers and witnesses to the incident, and a lot of work has to be done to determine the root cause and ensure that workers are kept safe.
Breaking down with emotion, Nolan says “workers should not have to deal with this.”
