The pedestrian mall may be done for this year, but at least one St. John’s councillor suggests extending it next year.
Sandy Hickman made the “daring” comment during Tuesday’s public council meeting.
He says the challenge is to enhance and make it better next year.
“Dare I say make it a little bit longer,” he says, adding he’s been inundated with calls to extend the pedestrian mall for the month of September.
Councillor Debbie Hanlon, the city’s lead on the issue, says formal feedback, as opposed to social media, is the best way to get an opinion heard and acted upon.
She says special events staff are working hard to document all comments regarding the pedestrian mall, but recommends contacting City Hall directly, rather than on social media, noting the formal route can increase the odds of success.
Some businesses within and outside the mall were opposed to extending it this year.
There are also logistical issues when it comes to deliveries and hiring security for the extra days.
